Can I bring my car?
Customs Duty and/or Goods and Services Tax (GST) is payable on all
motor vehicles. Before your removals company can calculate the amounts,
they will have to establish the date you purchased the vehicle and the
original purchase price.
Vehicles less than 30 years old attract both Customs duty and GST at
10%. Vehicles over 30 years of age attract 10% GS, but no Customs duty.
For vehicles exceeding a certain level (currently A$57,009) there's an
additional 25% Luxury Car Tax. There is no Customs Duty on a Motor
Cycle, but GST at 10% will apply.
Import approval must be gained prior to shipment, otherwise your
vehicle will be re-exported or destroyed. You may also face a fine of up
to A$13,000. Import approval is also required for such items as mini
motorbikes, quad bikes, ride on mowers and motorised scooters.
